Mamo Miheretu replaces Dr. Yinager Dessie as central bank’s governor

Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed appointed Mamo Miheretu as governor of the National Bank of
Ethiopia (NBE) replacing Dr. Yinager Dessie.
Mamo Miheretu , the architect of the national home grown economic reform program, was the
Prime Minister’s adviser on policy matters. He is also CEO of the Ethiopian Investment Holdings, the state owned investment conglomerate.
Though the reason for the removal of Dr. Yinager Dessie is not yet known bank officials believe that there is an urgent need to reform the central bank as the government is liberalizing the financial sector.
“As foreign banks are coming the government has to reform the national bank. And I think that is the reason why a change in the helm of the NBE is made,” a senior banker told Origins Business.
There is also reshuffle in the Council of Ministers.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has requested the House of Peoples Representatives to approve the
appointment of Dr. Alemu Sime as Minister of Transport and Logistics replacing Dagmawit Moges,
Habtamu Tegegn Minister of Mines replacing Takele Umma and Girma Amentie Minister of Agriculture replacing Umer Hussien. Prime Minister Abiy has also appointed Alemtsehay Pawlos head of the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Daniel Kibret adviser to the prime minster on social affairs, Ambassador Taye Akilessilassie adviser to the prime minister on foreign affairs and Meles Alemu coordinator of the democracy system building sector under minister portfolio.
