Gov’t seeks to boost mining sector share in Ethiopia’s GDP
The government disclosed that it has a plan to boost mining sector share in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.
Mining contributes only 1% to the GDP of Ethiopia.
“We’ve a plan to increase mining’s sector to 17% in ten years,” Takele Uma (Engineer), Minister of Mines said Thursday while the International Mining and Technology Expo (MINTEX) 2022 edition opened at the Millennium Hall.
The Expo has been officially opened by the guest of honor President Sahlework Zewde.
More than 270 Ethiopian and foreign companies are partaking on the expo.
Takele said with the aim of boosting mining sector share in the economy the government crafted mining policy and proclamation.
“Various activities have been launched to produce mines with better quality and export the products,” he said.
The expo hosts various mining-related businesses. List of exhibitors’ includes mining companies, jewelry manufacturers and exporters, mining technology manufacturers and importers, and financial institutions.
Takele said the expo will serve as a platform for the participating firms to promote their services directly to local and international consumers.
It will also provide an opportunity for international companies to explore the investment opportunities in Ethiopia’s mining sector, Takele added.
