France provides €5 mln for restoration of Lalibela

The government of France has grated Ethiopia 5 million Euros for the renovation project of the rock hewn churches of Lalibela.

Lalibela is United Nations Scientific, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed world heritage site in Ethiopia.

The grant agreement was signed on Thursday, October 20, 2022 between Semereta Sewasew, State Minister of Finance and Rémi Maréchaux, French Ambassador to Ethiopia at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance.

The agreement is a 5 million Euros (260 million Birr) grant to support the next phase of the preservation and restoration of the eleven Lalibela churches. This funding complements the immersive exhibition “Lalibela: Carving Faith” now on display at the Entoto Fine Arts, according to French Development Agency (AFD).
