Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has inaugurated Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone on Sunday.
Dire Dawa is selected to host the free trade zone due to its proximity to ports, market potential, huge cargo gravity and suitability for multimodal transport and logistics operation.
Increasing import substitution and export revenue, job creation, and skill transfer are among the goals of the free trade zone.
“The Free Trade Zones we are building is one of our ways to integrate into a rapidly changing world,” PM Abiy said, adding, “I have no doubt that the zones will not only facilitate trade and investment but also enhance our technological capabilities.”
The industrial park is located 515 kilometers from Addis Abeba on 150 hectares of land. The park, which opened in 2018 with 15 factory sheds, specializes in garment, apparel, and textile manufacturing and currently hosts companies from China, Italy, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia.
