Contractors complain of high cement prices

Girma Hailemariam (Eng.), President of the Ethiopian Contractors Association told Ethio Trade and Investment Forum radio show that contractors are complaining of skyrocketing prices of cement and other construction materials.

“The contractors are even starting to cease construction due to the price hike,” Girma said. A quintal of cement is sold from 1250 to 1300 Birr in Addis Abeba. “But a legal receipt is not given for the transaction,” he added.

Besides Cement, prices of Armata Steel and finishing materials are also increasing at a higher rate.

“The problem is not beyond the government capacity and it should give a solution for it,” he said. “Changing regulatory Ministry and Authority will not solve the problem permanently; what is needed is government’s commitment,” he stressed.
