The state owned telecom company, Ethio Telecom, launched a 5G mobile network in a ceremony held on Monday May 9, 2022 at the Sheraton Addis.
The official launching ceremony has been attended by senior government officials, company executives and members of the media.
The fifth generation network (5G) characterized by the fastest speed (up to10 Gbs), low latency (less than 1 ms) and massive communication capability (up to 1 Million connections within 1 km2); can unlock blazing fast speeds in more places, real-time responses and massive connectivity.
CEO of Ethio Telecom Frehiwot Tamiru said the introduction of the 5G mobile network is part and parcel of the company’s effort in realizing the digital transform in Ethiopia. “This would enable companies to expedite their business operations and create jobs,” Frehiwot said.
5G mobile network speed is 20 times faster than the 4G network.
With such high speeds, superior reliability and negligible latency, 5G will impact industries such as mission critical services requiring real time decisions, manufacturing plants, remote health care, precision agriculture, self-driving vehicles, IoT, real-time operations making them all a reality, according to Ethio Telecom.
The telecom giant has been a pioneer telecom service provider in Africa. It has been introducing latest technologies to support socio economic development of Ethiopia from its establishment to date, playing enabling role in the overall development of the nation in all-weathers.
As part of our commitment to realize the government’s digital transformation agenda, the telecom enterprise has been expanding 3G and 4G networks throughout the nation effectively achieving 97% telecom services coverage, densifying the network and upgrading the earlier technologies to the latest ones.
Continuing the effort in enhancing and modernizing the country’s telecom services, Ethio Telecom has unveiled pre-commercial 5G services at six mobile stations in Addis Abeba.
Ethio Telecom, Unity Park, Andinet Park, Sheraton Addis and Churchill Square are the five places where the 5G mobile network is operational.
“The new 5G network will be used to expand access to education, health and finance, among others,” Frehiwot Tamiru, CEO of Ethio Telecom said.
The service is useful for mining companies, oil exploration and commercial farms, according to Frehiwot. She said that surgeons can perform surgery via tele medicine using the 5G network.
“Business enterprises will also be more competitive due to the new service, which is part of the digitalization process,” Frehiwot said.
As part of the pre-commercial trial service, it also started services in the Capital and plans expanding footprint to regional cities up to 150 sites over the coming 12 months.
“We shall further roll out 5G sites to more areas based on feasible business demands,” Ethio Telecom said in a statement.
The pre-commercial deployment of the 5G service in Addis Abeba, as the capital city of Ethiopia and the diplomatic seat of international and continental institutions is in line with our aspiration to become a preferred operator as well as with our 3 years’ growth strategy and technology roadmap.
The Ethiopian Communication Authority has furnished with temporary 5G Spectrum approval to implement the pre-commercial trial of the service while our Strategic Partner Huawei technologies have deployed the 5G network.
Ethio Telecom has invested 40 million dollars to build the 5G mobile network developed by Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant.
This 5G service will provide Ethio Telecom customers with best-in-class solutions improve their experience and allow our enterprise customers to boost productivity, enhance operational efficiency, and introduce new solutions to their customers.
Ethiopia is the sixth African nation after nation to launch 5G mobile network after Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria South Africa and Uganda.
