ID Ethiopia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC to partner in the digitalization of the National ID program.
The MoU discusses the setup of joint pilots for registration and eKYC integration. eKYC process includes ID card verification, face verification, document verification such as utility bills as proof of address, and biometric verification.
Boosting financial inclusion and further enhancing the digital economy is a key to us, Safaricom said in a statement. “We are honored to partner with the National ID program.”
“We remain committed to supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation initiatives,” Safaricom’s statement added.
The Ethiopian national ID program envisions to “Build a foundational identification platform for Ethiopia, proving that an individual is who he/she claims to be, in a secure, electronic and sustainable way, to support individual identity use cases for both citizens and legal residents of Ethiopia by 2025.”
