Ethiopia gets 800,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines from China

On October 24, 2021, 800,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines — donated by China have arrived at Bole International Airport.                          

Dr. Lia Tadesse, Minister of Health applauded the support of vaccines received from Mr. Zhao Zhiyuan, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia at the Bole International Airport.

Dr. Lia commended China for the comprehensive Covid-19 prevention support it has provided. Until now, 1.8 million doses of vaccines have been donated by China to Ethiopia.

Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Zhiyuan said for his part that China has been donating Covid-19 vaccines to various countries including Ethiopia, as of September 2020. And added that today’s donation was in line with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s pledge to support developing countries with Covid-19 vaccines.

He said the Chinese government is working to make more than two billion doses of the vaccine available worldwide, adding that 100 million doses will be distributed to developing countries.

Dr. Lia emphasized the Covid-19 vaccines have been received from various international organizations and governments so far and the Chinese government had previously provided close to 2 million doses of vaccines.

She added that “Today’s donation of 800,000 doses of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines is part of the Chinese government’s pledge to provide additional 2 million doses of the vaccine to our country.”

She expressed her gratitude to the Chinese government and people and informed citizens of Ethiopia to get the vaccine at government health centers in their area.

Ethiopia plans to vaccinate 20 percent of its population by the end of 2021.

China donated several batches of medical supplies to Ethiopia last year, and a Chinese team of medical experts has been sent to Ethiopia to support its fight the pandemic.
